Biography short version:

INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST- FINE ARTS- VOCALIST/COMPOSER-OWNER OF ATELIER STIJNTJE

With a career spanning over four decades in the music industry and education, I work interdisciplinary wherever possible: *handwritten music and lyrics worked into my art, *performing my art and music in an exhibition with concert. I love to interweave the depth of jazz, folk, and soul with vibrant, colorful narratives in my paintings and mixed media. My three albums, IN THE PALM OF MY HAND, SOULSILLY Xperience, and SOULSILLY TOO, stem from the same source as my paintings.  As a vocal coach at the conservatory of Amsterdam I have the privilege of working with talented young people from all over the world and conveying the essence of improvisation and storytelling to the next generation of artists. Working interdisciplinary resonates with the music world nowadays.

Biography long version

So to sum up: I'm a visual artist- fine arts, vocalist/composer, vocal coach at the Jazz department  of the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

ART

Painting is essential to me, comparable in importance to my musical endeavors. I have chosen to remain self-taught in painting, avoiding formal lessons to keep an open mind, influenced by my music education. In 2019, an early painting, a self-portrait, was praised in Atelier as one of the best submissions. In 2021, I was nominated for 'Painting of the Year', affirming my ability to connect with audiences through my art. I find inspiration in my surroundings; initially at Amstelpark, but now at the Zaan River after relocating to Zaandijk in 2023. My husband and I live in historic 17th-century houses: “Nico” is our home, and “Stijntje” is my studio with a music room in the attic. Living and working in this setting is a great privilege that deeply inspires me. I'm developing a portrait series titled "Vrouwepower," initiated in 2019. The composition, movement, and tension in painting parallel those in music, with structure and emotional depth linking both arts. In recent works, I've begun incorporating my old sheet music into my artistic expressions. Currently, I am exploring various surfaces for painting, including applying paint and sheet music to wooden ornaments with an embroidered version of my latest portrait on linen.

MUSIC

With over 40 years of experience in performance, songwriting, and singing both in the Netherlands and internationally, I blend elements of Jazz, Soul, Folk, and Latin in my singing and writing. At the heart of my work lies storytelling—crafting deep communication within the band and connecting with the audience, all with the exciting freedom of improvisation.

After releasing three albums, I'm excited to present my latest project, "Colours and Songs,"
an interdisciplinary initiative that combines an art exhibition with a concert experience.
I’ve had the pleasure of performing this project several times, including in the stunning 17th-century venue 'Wester-Amstel' in Amsterdam and the beautiful 'Stompe Toren' church in Spaarnwoude.

CONSERVATORY OF AMSTERDAM

Graduating in 1988 with a degree in Jazz Vocals, I began my journey as a vocal teacher
at the CvA
that same year. Over 38 years, the Jazz department has grown
into a renowned international institution.
With CvA as my base, I've also taught at various institutions in the Netherlands and abroad.
Like summer programs in Norway, Belgium and Liechtenstein.
Amsterdam has formed global partnerships, and in 2018 I developed online classes
for The True School of Music in Mumbai, focusing on singing and lyric writing.
Here are some questions I pose to my students:
What ignites your passion for a song, your unique voice, your compositions,
and your collaborations with fellow musicians?
What other disciplines would you like to integrate:
elements such as dance, video, or various theatrical components.

What is your story you want to tell, how to communicate that with your fellow musicians
and how do you connect that narrative with your audience?
I consider it a privilege to work with talented young people worldwide:
And l tell you: the exchange of inspiration is mutual.
